WMWA Rules
Rulebook
1.  There is no base running – only pitching, hitting, and fielding.
2.  Teams may bat up to six (6) players, but only three (3) may play defense.  Defenses can field
less than three players if they wish but all players in the field must bat. Defensive players may
position themselves anywhere in fair territory.  Pitchers must pitch from the center of the pitching
line.
3.  The strike zone target is 22" by 30" and 16" off the ground. A pitch hitting any part of the target
or the post on top of the strike zone is a strike.  Pitches that hit the post below the strike zone are
balls.
4.  A pitched ball that hits the batter is a ball, although the batter must attempt to avoid being hit.
5.  The batter makes all fair and foul calls.  Close calls on doubles and triples are made by the
fielder(s) closest to the play.
The batter will make his own check swing calls.
6.  Pitch count -
- A walk is 6 balls.
- Intentional walks may be given without throwing any pitches. The pitcher will just inform the
batter that he is being walked.
- Any combination of two (2) fouls or strikes is an out.
- One swing and a miss is an out.
7.
The pitching speed limit is 35 mph, and it will be enforced with a radar gun. The penalty
for pitching at excessive speeds is that the player may not pitch any more during that game
and must sit out the next game entirely.  There are no warnings.
8.  The pitching line and singles line is 43' 6" from the strike zone target.  The doubles line is at
65'. The home run fence is at 85' straight away and 89' to each foul pole. The fence is 6' high
with 52' between the foul poles.
9.
All batted balls must reach the singles line in fair territory to be considered fair, but ground
balls may be fielded in front of the singles line for an out, provided that they reach the in-play
line.  The in-play line will be 38’ from the strike zone target.  All ground balls must reach this line
before they may be fielded for an out.  Bobbled ground balls or dropped fly balls in the zone
between the in-play line and the singles line will be considered singles.  Balls that stop
untouched between the in-play line and the singles line are considered foul balls.  Fielders may
not touch ground balls before they reach the in-play line.  Ground balls that are touched before
reaching this line will be singles.  There is no penalty for dropping a fly ball that does not reach
the in-play line.  These dropped balls will be considered foul.

10.  The paved areas are out of bounds.  Any balls caught while the fielder is standing on the
pavement are foul balls not outs.  Any balls that touch tree branches are considered dead ball
fouls, so any catches made on these balls do not count as outs.
11.
Foul balls -
- Any hit ball not reaching the singles line is a strike.
- Ground balls outside of foul lines when reaching the singles line are strikes.
- Fly balls landing in foul ground, touched in foul ground, or going wide of foul poles are strikes.
A fly ball shall be judged as fair or foul according to the relative position of the ball and the foul
line including the foul pole, and not as to whether the infielder is on foul or fair territory at the
time he touches the ball.
12.
Singles -
- Any ball reaching the singles line in fair ground.
- Fair ground balls not fielded cleanly in front of singles line.
- Fair fly ball touched but not caught short of the doubles line.
- Any batted ball that hits another wiffle ball in fair ground in front of the singles line.
13.
Doubles -
- Fair balls reaching the doubles line in the air, but landing before the fence.
- Fly balls landing in front of the doubles line that then hit the fence in fair ground, or ground
balls that travel all the way to the fence in fair territory.
14.
Triples - Fair balls hitting the fence in the air or deflecting off of a fielder into the fence.  Balls
that deflect off a fielder and hit the fence in foul territory are considered doubles.
15.
Home runs -
- Balls crossing over the fence while in fair territory and not caught.
- Balls hitting a foul pole above the fence.
16.
Double plays - Fly balls caught and then immediately thrown to hit the strike zone in the air.
This is only in effect with a runner on base. Successful double plays will remove the lead from
the bases.  Runners do not advance on missed attempts.
17.  Imaginary runners on base advance as the hitter does.
18.  Only the official (baseball size) plastic wiffle ball with 8 elongated holes will be used.
19.  Balls may not be intentionally scuffed.  No ball with a crack greater than 1/4" may be used.
All balls are subject to approval by the commissioners.
20.  Hard plastic or aluminum bats may be used.  The only bats sanctioned for use by the
WMWA are the classic yellow Wiffle Bat, Ledge Sledge, Wiffle-Pro Black Magic, and JMX
(Diamond Co.).
Wooden bats are illegal.  The plastic “Ken Griffey Jr” bat and the Moonshot Bats
are also illegal.
Classic yellow Wiffle bats may be taped on the barrel for the purpose of sealing
small cracks and reducing slippage.  This is one or two layers only.  Bats that are taped in
excess to make the them heavier, stronger, and noticeably larger are illegal.  Any bat is subject
to approval by the commissioner.
21.  All players must play bare handed. Batters may use batting gloves.
22.  Fielders can position as they wish in fair territory without obstructing the batter. Pitchers
must pitch from the middle of the field.
23.  Each game is 6 innings long. If game is tied after 6 innings, the 7th begins with the bases
loaded.
24.  Games are official after 4 innings, with a 10 run mercy rule after 4 innings.
25.  A team is awarded 3 losses for failing to show on game day. Their scheduled opponent is
awarded 3 wins. A team has 15 minutes after scheduled game time to show before forfeiting
games.
26.  The rules of major league baseball shall apply to all situations not covered by these rules.
27.  Any dispute or questions regarding interpretation of these rules shall be resolved by a
member of the Competition Committee.  In-game disputes should be resolved before
continuing the game by notifying a committee member.
28.
NO ALCOHOL is permitted on the premises.
